LIM Powered 120 mph Maglev Vehicle with PSA LIMs

DESCRIPTION  

Power Superconductor Maglev Linear Induction Motors (LIM) combine direct-drive, high-thrust with an ultra high-strength guideway-mounted reaction rail.  All propulsion force is transmitted over a 2-5 mm air gap from the guideway-mounted reaction rail to the stator assembly.  The Maglev propulsion motor is designed for either a repulsive or neutral vertical force; there is no magnetic attraction between the reaction rail and stator.
 

The epoxy-encapsulated single-sided stator assembly is composed of a copper-wound magnetic core using high permeability silicon steel.  Custom widths, special lengths or double-sided motors are available on request.  Windings with ratings from 240 volts to 4160 volts are available depending on the kW rating.  The reaction rail is composed of Type 1100 aluminum or beryllium-copper for high-duty cycle operations.  High Power Density Model LIM-600 and LIM-800 have water cooled stator windings.  Standards models are air cooled.
 

Maglev LIMs are for use with urban transit vehicles having electrodynamic or superconducting suspension and guidance.  Each vehicle typically has four propulsion motors arranged as two per side.  The PSA control system provides high speed regenerative or dynamic braking with the LIMs up to a deceleration force of 112,000 Newtons (25,200 lbs.) per vehicle.  No frictional braking is required except to hold the vehicle stationary.
 

Typical applications include people-movers, transit vehicles, amusement park vehicles, shuttle cars, carriages for molten metals, camera positioning systems, and water rides.
