LIMRV
MAGLEV PRESS RELEASE

Power Superconductor and the Lawrence County Maglev Consortium have obtained the exclusive use of the U.S. Government’s High-Speed Maglev Test Vehicle LIMRV. This is a 250-mph linear induction motor propelled locomotive-train which will be retrofitted with a Fourth Generation Maglev Levitation and Propulsion System using high efficiency Cryogenic Magnets. Construction work on the vehicle will begin June 1, 2003 in New Castle, PA. The high-speed guideway will begin construction in October 2003 in Lawrence and Beaver Counties and initially build a 7.5-mile test track. The new Maglev Initiative uses 100% U.S. built technology initially developed at Carnegie Mellon University and at Imperial College of Science and Technology. The Fourth Generation U.S. Maglev System is a large-airgap suspension system with Electrodynamic Suspension (EDS) technology. This system has no relationship to the German Transrapid System marketed by Maglev Inc., which uses the older attractive type Maglev technology. The Press Conference will also show the Nation’s first revenue Maglev System now being tested at Norfolk, Virginia at Old Dominion University. This Maglev System has the 800 kilowatt, 120-mph LIM propulsion system built by Power Superconductor. Lockheed Martin Aerospace is the vehicle integrator and American Maglev Technologies is the system developer and civil engineers. The Norfolk Maglev System uses 100% U.S. technology and is state funded.
